Papers 1836-1910.

Papers include a diary, a book of prose and exercises, newsclippings and other sundry items documenting life in Pittsburgh's South Side neighborhood during the 19th century. The diary contains entries for his daily life as a young man in Pittsburgh in 1845 and includes entries for the fire of April 10, 1845, the rebuilding of the city, reform meetings, deaths of family and his work as a carpenter. The prose book includes comical verse of domestic and daily life in Pittsburgh as well as mathematical exercises and rules from Stevenson's commercial classes. Newspaper clippings primarily include stories and obituaries of Stevenson and his brothers. Also included is a photograph of Sarah Stevenson (c1870), arranged as MFQ #73.

Andrew Brown Stevenson (1817-1902) was a carpenter and pattern maker before entering the financial industry. He served as president of the First National Bank of Birmingham (Pittsburgh, Pa.) for several years. His son, John, was also a banker and president of the Manufacturer's Bank of the South Side (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Andrew's siblings included Thomas J. Stevenson (1826-1902), a postmaster at Natrona, Pa. and William E. Stevenson (1820-1883), the first governor of West Virginia. Fro...
